Agriculture and Food
The griculture and food sector deals with issues such as production, distribution, supply, import, export and resource management policy-making to promote agricultural productivity and food security in the country.
Currently, there are about 132 companies in different sectors of agricultural biotechnology with 170 commercialized products in the market. The share of agriculture sector in employment is about 24 percent in the country.
The capacities and advantages of the country for development of food and agriculture include:
- The area of agricultural lands (agriculture and gardening) is reported about 35 to 37 million hectares that is approximately 21 percent of the total area of the country; of which about 18.7 million hectares is currently used for agricultural purposes and around 2.7 million hectares for orchards;
- About 14.5 percent share of agriculture in GDP;
- About 20 percent share of agriculture in employment;
- About 4 million workers in this sector;
- About 30 percent share of agriculture in non-oil exports;
- Employment capacity of about 350 thousand of agriculture graduates.
Some of the achievements in food and agriculture are:
-Tracing and identifying issues and challenges and providing innovative solutions;
-Development of technologies and innovations with applicability in solving problems and challenges in the agriculture sector;
-Monitoring and identifying models and technologies related to the development of the agriculture sector in other countries.
